National TSRP Webinar Series -- Traffic Tuesdays

The Nation’s Traffic Safety Resource Prosecutors are pleased to announce a new monthly National TSRP Webinar Series entitled -- “Traffic Tuesdays!” On the second Tuesday of each month, a webinar training will be presented for prosecutors and law enforcement officers on important issues related to traffic prosecution. The webinars will be held each Traffic Tuesday at 1:00 PM (MST)/12:00 PM (PST). Webinars are recorded and can be viewed at a later date.

October 11, 2016 -- Current Drug Trends
Current Drug Trends will cover a number of "new" drugs on the market as well as a return of some of the "oldies" making a comeback. It will include a review of the current nomenclature and statistics, as well expected signs and symptoms. Each drug discussed will include images and video examples for review.

November 8, 2016 -- After the Stop & Before the Arrest
This webinar will discuss the U.S. Constitution's limits on an officer's investigation and interaction with the motor vehicle occupants after a stop and prior to placing the driver under arrest. This webinar will NOT deal with those stops where the reason for the stop provides the officer with probable cause to physically arrest the driver and state law allows a physical arrest. The webinar will address stops where state law does not allow a physical arrest for the offense or the officer suspects the driver is impaired but does not have probable cause until after additional investigation. For example, when the officer stops a driver upon observing one or more of the NHTSA visual cues for impaired driving that are not a crime. This webinar will address how long an officer may detain the motor vehicle occupants during the investigation to determine if the driver is impaired. The webinar will also address whether an unconstitutional stop or an unconstitutionally long stop or actions in violations of state law always require that the evidence be suppress or the case dismissed.

December 13, 2016 - Putting it All Together: Report Writing & Case Preperation
The webinar will focus on writing first-rate DUI reports and discuss what prosecutors look for in these reports. It will also address what officers can and should do before trial to prepare for presenting effective and convincing testimony.

March 14, 2017 -- Cross Examining the Defense Expert: How to Make it Count
Effectively cross-examining a defense expert in an impaired driving crime is daunting. But a well-done cross examination of the expert is exhilarating and devastating to the defense. Our panel of experienced prosecutors provide “how-to-do-it” guidance during each of the important phases for cross examining the defense expert: Preparation, Motions In Limine, Direct Examination, and Cross Examination. Whether the defense expert is a local hack or a national icon—these techniques will help!

April 11, 2017 -- Oral Fluid Testing at Roadside
The use of oral fluid for the detection of drugs continues to gain interest nationwide. In this webinar, the presenters will discuss the challenges and benefits of using oral fluid to detect drugs. They will also cover Michigan’s roadside drug testing pilot program as well what the future holds for oral fluid testing in drugged driving investigations and prosecutions.

June 13, 2017 -- Jumpstart Your Investigation & Prosecution: Resources for Law Enforcment and Prosecutors in Impaired Driving Cases

July 11, 2017 -- The Basics of Prosecuting a Marijuana DUI
This webinar will discuss the basics of prosecuting a driver who was under the influence of marijuana. It will highlight the similarities between prosecuting an alcohol-impaired driver and a marijuana-impaired driver. It will be presented by Senior Police Officer John Wilber from the Westminster (CO) Police Department.

August 8, 2017 -- 3-D Crime Scene Scanning
Crime scene documentation can be a very involved process. Both time consuming and labor intensive, it can be demanding for a police department to accurately capture a crime scene. With the implementation of 3-D scanning some of these tasks can be made less demanding and yet more complete. It can capture the crime scene “as is” for later investigation and can also help Investigators analyze blood spatter, bullet trajectories, and line of sight. Instructor Chris Steiner of the Arvada, Colorado, Police department will discuss the basics of 3-D crime scene scanning and the products that can be created, (highlighting its use in serious crash cases.
