When an Idaho driver’s license is suspended, the offender may qualify for a restricted permit allowing driving to and from work, education, medical treatments, etc. If the license suspension is by the department, the offender may apply for a restricted permit through the Transportation Department in Boise. If the court suspended the license, the offender must apply for restricted driving privileges from the court in which convicted. (Exception: If a licensed Idaho driver is convicted in an out-of-state court, that driver must apply to the Idaho Transportation Department in Boise.) A restricted driving permit issued by the Department or the Court does not allow for commercial motor vehicle (CMV) operation.
When the suspension or revocation ends, a driver may receive his/her license back by applying to the Idaho Transportation Department in Boise and paying a reinstatement fee of $15.00 to $180.00, depending on the nature of the suspension. If the license was suspended for certain serious offenses, e.g. reckless driving or driving under the influence, the driver must also provide proof for three years that they are able to meet financial obligations arising from any accident. The usual method of proof is a certified statement of liability insurance coverage from the insurer (an SR-22 certificate). For information on other options, contact the Idaho Transportation Department in Boise at (208) 334-8736.
